From the kiln to the reduction chamber – During the Raku in-school field trip, art teacher Paul Moench and senior Kaden Kilmer-Setrakian removed the fired ceramic pieces from the kiln and placed them in the reduction chamber where the lack of oxygen created a chemical reaction that hardened the glazes into metallic finishes.
Montville Township High School Ceramics students Saanvi Yalamanchili and Morgan Soehnlein, both juniors, scrubbed the carbon from their works of art to reveal the metallic and carbon finishes achieved through the ancient potter's technique of Raku.

A combination of finishes is often used to create patterns and textures. The senior's basket has a shimmering metallic look intermingled with black matte finishes.

When Frenchely Godet-Desmarais’ vase was removed from the kiln it was placed on a brick to cool. Immediately the senior applied horse hair to burn a pattern onto the surface of the clay. The smoldering process created a delicate and balanced design.

Pottery cooling after being removed from the smoldering reduction chamber. Once cooled the carbon will be scrubbed from the surfaces to reveal the depth of colors and textures created during the Raku firing process. The lack of oxygen in the chamber causes a chemical reaction to with the glazes.

MTHS - Seniors in Mrs. Pierce's English class assembled the final versions of their year long writing project - an ABC book that required students to reflect on the past, present, and future versions of themselves. The final books the students created are filled with personal insights and observations, and this will be a keepsake that they will treasure years after they graduate from MTHS.

MTHS - Yesterday, Professor Aihua Li from Montclair State University visited the Mandarin Chinese classes and taught students Chinese Abacus. The abacus is an ancient tool that can still be effective in helping students visualize mathematical concepts and build a strong understanding of fundamental mathematical operations. Our Mandarin students had fun using Abacus as a calculator to do simple addition and subtraction. Thank you to Mrs. Zishan (Annie) Huang for organizing this experience for our students!

MTHS - Last night the two International Business Practice Firm (IBPF) classes celebrated their third annual Family Night in the MTHS media center. This event allows family members to hear about the IBPF class where the students form a company, come up with a product idea, then operate in a virtual economy throughout the year using the salary they earn to purchase products from other "companies" in the US and abroad. Members from each company - Charge Caddy and InVision - presented their work to the audience which included their business plan, monthly newsletter, sales report, website, social media posts and commercial. The "employees" did a great job representing their companies and MTHS!
