Toby Cohen has taught math at Montville Township’s Robert R. Lazar Middle School for 50 years. On March 13, 2025, the Montville Township Chamber of Commerce awarded Cohen the Gold Service Award for 50 years of dedicated service to the students and families of Montville Township.
Former middle school math student, Carl Grau, presented the Gold Service Award to his 7th grade math teacher, Toby Cohen. Cohen has taught math in the Robert R. Lazar Middle School for more than 50 years.
Middle school math teacher Toby Cohen with her math teacher Charles “Charlie” Grau. Grau taught Cohen in West Orange NJ. Grau has lived in Montville Township for nearly 60 years. He served on the Board of Education for 30 of those years. Cohen has taught at Montville Township’s Robert R. Lazar Middle School for 50 years. In addition to being a former student of Grau’s, Cohen taught Grau’s son, Carl, 7th grade math.

a teacher exchange program, which Karin Wardell from NJ and a Florida high school teacher she met in TII developed, is currently tracking migratory birds from NJ to FL, As part of this exchange, Wardell is participating with Fernando, a Biology and STEM teacher based in Florida. The pair put in their applications this past summer and are focusing their exchange on migratory birds between New Jersey and Florida.
