Painting with chlorophyll utilizes nature's pigments to create dynamic art. Chlorophyll changes color as it reacts to light. These three members of the student STEAM Club helped to facilitate STEAM events for their grades 6 to 8 peers at Robert R. Lazar Middle School.
The Lazar STEAM Day Event also featured a station with Montville Township High School Science Olympiad Representative Natalia Dudek. Dudek, a MTHS sophomore, achieved 2nd in Remote Sensing and 6th in Green Generation at the Science Olympiad. She spoke with Lazar students about competing in the New Jersey Institute of Technology Science Olympiad competitions at both the middle school and high school levels.
In April and May the Montville Township Public Schools district celebrated STEAM across all district schools. Teachers Jerald Wayne and Karin Wardell, Lazar Steam Club Advisors, supported student club members as they facilitated STEAM events for their peers in grades 6 to 8 on May 31, 2024.

Lazar Steam Day included at station that explained the aerodynamics of making paper airplanes. Students in the Lazar STEAM Club organized and facilitated the day-long exploration of STEAM. Each of the 747 grade 6 through 8 students in the Lazar Middle School participated at some point throughout the day on May 31, 2024.
When designing an object to float on air, aerodynamics, stability, wind resistance and material selection are significant engineering considerations.

Tie-Dye Rocket Art uses a chemical reaction to create a gas expansion. Increasing pressure results in a colorful explosion. Students created a chemical reaction thrugh the use of water, dye and Alka-Seltzer to create these colorful tie-dye patterns.
Lazar's Living Lessons: Surviving 9/11- Manuel Chea's Story. Chea worked in IT on the forty-ninth floor of the North Tower. From the kiln to the reduction chamber – During the Raku in-school field trip, art teacher Paul Moench and senior Kaden Kilmer-Setrakian removed the fired ceramic pieces from the kiln and placed them in the reduction chamber where the lack of oxygen created a chemical reaction that hardened the glazes into metallic finishes.
Montville Township High School Ceramics students Saanvi Yalamanchili and Morgan Soehnlein, both juniors, scrubbed the carbon from their works of art to reveal the metallic and carbon finishes achieved through the ancient potter's technique of Raku.
Victoria Gonzalez with her ceramic basket. Raku pieces that have been glazed emerge from reduction with a metallic look. Those without glaze will have a black matte finish. A combination of finishes is often used to create patterns and textures. The senior's basket has a shimmering metallic look intermingled with black matte finishes.

Burnt feathers and horse hair create a design on this unglazed ceramic vase.
When Frenchely Godet-Desmarais’ vase was removed from the kiln it was placed on a brick to cool. Immediately the senior applied horse hair to burn a pattern onto the surface of the clay. The smoldering process created a delicate and balanced design.
Ceramics students participated in an in-school Raku field trip. These works of art were fired using the ancient technique of Raku.

Pottery cooling after being removed from the smoldering reduction chamber. Once cooled the carbon will be scrubbed from the surfaces to reveal the depth of colors and textures created during the Raku firing process. The lack of oxygen in the chamber causes a chemical reaction to with the glazes.
