As a young man, he embarked on a career in mercantile pursuits in both New York and New Orleans. He managed the New Orleans establishment for sixteen years..." He returned to Montville and was the Twp.'s Postmaster. He was also in the CA Gold Rush for 4 years, built a farm next to what is now #Lazar, and raised 5 daughters and 2 sons.
