The New Jersey School Boards Association presented Montville Township Board of Education Member, Dr. Karen Cortellino, with the prestigious NJSBA Champion Award during Workshop 2024 in Atlantic City. NJSBA Champion Awards are presented to individuals who exemplify outstanding dedication and effort in areas such as teamwork, leadership, innovation and other qualities that help the NJSBA advance its mission to promote the achievement of all students.
Dr. Karen Cortellino, was presented the prestigious NJSBA Champion Award during Workshop 2024 in Atlantic City. Cortellino, a member of the Montville Township Board of Education since 2006, and current President of the NJSBA Board of Directors, is a state-wide leader in board of education service, training and support. Cortellino’s nearly two decades of on-going and consistent leadership and dedication to the volunteers who are elected to boards of education across New Jersey has helped to enhance NJSBA’s mission to “positively support the education of New Jersey’s 1.4 million public school students.”

The cast of HONUS AND ME at Robert R. Lazar Middle School in Montville Township, NJ. This family fun event is a play based on the Dan Gutman novel by the same name. Directed by music teacher Jordan Green, HONUS & ME is the story of a young baseball fan who discovers a 1909 Honus Wager baseball card. The card allows the fan to travel back in time and meet the baseball legend. Performances are Thursday and Friday, October 24 and 25 at 7PM on the Lazar Middle School stage. “Cedar Hill Elementary School has a very strong relationship with The Seeing Eye®,” said Cedar Hill principal Dr. Michael Raj. Raj and School Nurse Bonnie DiCola introduced Forrest (“Forest”), the newest puppy-in-training, to the members of the BOE. Raj and DiCola made a special presentation to the BOE regarding the district’s robust The Seeing Eye® Puppy Training Program. “Forest” is the twenty-third puppy DiCola has raised in the Cedar Hill Elementary School setting.
Forrest (“Forest”) is the twenty-third puppy Cedar Hill Elementary School Nurse, Bonnie DiCola, has raised through The Seeing Eye® Puppy Training Program. This program is part of the Cedar Hill curriculum. Cedar Hill students and staff assist in the raising and training of DiCola’s The Seeing Eye® dogs. While at Cedar Hill Elementary, Forrest’s name will spelled “Forest,” so that young spellers will not be confused.

Dr. Arthur R. Dermer was the first Montville Township High School principal. On October 8, 1968 he broke ground with a ceremonial shovel. This gesture marked the official groundbreaking, making way for the building of MTHS.
In addition to Dr. Arthur R. Dermer (left), the school's principal, and Superintendent Nicholas C. De Vita (center), many dignitaries attended the Montville Township High School Groundbreaking ceremony on October 8, 1968. Fred Bauermann (2nd from right) was the President of the Montville Township Board of Education. In this photo the blueprint to the MTHS building is being held by those individuals who were instrumental in bringing the project to fruition.

Hayley Edelstein, Lily Smith, and Alexis Handler are the co-presidents of Gracie’s Army Foundation Club, a new and rapidly growing organization at Montville Township High School, with over 100 members. On Sunday, Sept. 22, the co-presidents, along with other club members, volunteered at the Gracie’s Army Foundation Go Gold 5K and Fun Run.  Gracie Ferluge was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma at the age of five. Now nine and in remission, her parents, Dina and Craig, founded the Gracie’s Army Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed at supporting families with children battling cancer.  Funds raised by the MTHS club go towards paying for chemotherapy, medication, gifts, and creating fun experiences for children fighting cancer.
