Picture of the MTHS Educators of the Year: Mrs. Parra, Mr. Naturale and Ms. Dolch

MTHS - Recently, a committee of individuals met to discuss the significant number of nominations received for the Princeton University Distinguished Secondary School Teaching Award, MTHS Educational Support Professional of the Year, and MTHS Teacher of the Year. Based on much discussion and deliberation amongst the members of that committee, it is our distinct honor to announce that Ms. Kimen Dolch, Mrs. Amanda Parra and Mr. Rob Naturale are the recipients of these recognitions.

Mr. Naturale will continue in the process to select the county and state Teacher of the Year, and Ms. Dolch will represent MTHS in the continuing competition, hosted by Princeton University. We know these three professionals will represent MTHS - and the Montville community - well.

"Amanda goes above and beyond in her role as the speech pathologist at the high school, consistently demonstrating exceptional dedication, compassion and professionalism. Amanda creates meaningful and engaging lessons that meet the diverse needs of all her students. She is especially influential in the ACCE program, where her support and expertise have made a lasting impact on both students and staff. MTHS Teacher of the Year: Mr. Rob Naturale

Here is what colleagues had to say about Mr. Naturale:

"Rob is such a ray of sunshine in the classroom...Rob brings fresh and fun energy to instruction - he shares personal anecdotes that relate to the topic at hand, has developed fun mnemonic devices and memory tricks to help kids remember difficult concepts and terminology, and is endlessly supportive of the kids in the classroom.

Not only does Rob make school fun and enjoyable for his students, but his sense of humor and infectious energy also benefit the staff. Rob has never shied away from a spirit day...He is so much fun and kind to all teaching staff. His inclusivity and positive energy improve the school culture."

"Rob exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding educator through his contagious positivity and genuine compassion for every student he serves. From the moment he enters the classroom, Mr. Naturale brings a spirit of joy and encouragement that uplifts students and colleagues. He combines his work ethic with a natural sense of humor, helping students feel at ease while engaging them in meaningful and impactful learning experiences."

"One of Mr. Naturale's most lasting contribution to MTHS is his creation of The Lounge, a safe, inclusive space where students can socialize and relax during lunch. Recognizing that some students needed a comfortable and welcoming environment, he took the initiative to design and establish this space. Through his efforts he [made] The Lounge a vibrant and engaging place that continues to thrive."

"Mr. Naturale's colleague hold him in the highest regard for his unwavering positivity, reliability, and collaborative spirit. He is known for always being willing to lend a hand, strengthen his peers, and foster a sense of community among staff. His students are equally enthusiastic, drawn into his warmth, humor and engaging teaching style. He employs innovative strategies, including positive behavior reinforcement, to create a classroom environment where students feel valued, motivated, and excited to learn.

Perhaps most inspiring is Mr. Naturale's ability to connect with students on a deep personal level. As an educator with Tourette's syndrome, he has transformed what others might view as a challenge into a powerful teaching tool. His openness about his condition fosters understanding and empathy while modeling resilience and self-acceptance. By embracing his tics and integrating them into his teaching, he shows students that authenticity and perseverance are sources of strength. This courage and honesty make him a role model not only for students with disabilities, but also for the entire school community."

Congratulations to Ms. Dolch, Mrs. Parra, and Mr. Naturale!
