Dear MTPS Community,

In an ongoing effort to promote positive student wellness and help families plan valuable time together, Montville Township Public Schools is committed to continuing homework-free religious holidays and school breaks.

For the past ten years, MTPS has implemented several versions of homework-free breaks. Previously, input was gathered from parents, teachers, and students and a task force was formed. As a result, recommendations were made for the schools to follow. Again, this year, one of the District goals is to implement, enhance, and evaluate ways to address mental health issues for faculty and students. This issue will continue to be investigated and more information will be communicated to the faculty and community at a later date.

For the remainder of this year, assignments will not be assigned over, or due immediately after, major religious holidays or school breaks. Assignments are discouraged during April recess but exceptions are made based upon the class at MTHS. This is due to many of the AP tests that are administered around this time period. If this is the case, no assignments will be due immediately upon the students’ return.

The remaining dates following the policy this year will be:

  • April 1-10 Passover, Good Friday, and Easter
  • April 21-23 Eid al-Fitr
  • May 27-30 Memorial Day

Family time is extremely important and this fact is recognized by MTPS. It is our hope that families can plan time together and take advantage of these precious years and that students use these respites to relax and enjoy their youthful days.

Respectfully,

Thomas A. Gorman, Ed.D.  Superintendent of Schools
