On Friday, April 26, 2019 at 9:00a.m., Montville Township will celebrate the community’s 21st Annual Arbor Day Celebration. Coordinated by the Montville Township Environmental Commission, the celebration will plant a tree in recognition of 2019 Honoree Fred Ackerman of the Montville Township Department of Public Works [DPW]. Also to be honored will be the fourth grade winners of the Environmental Commission’s 2019 Arbor Day Poster Contest.
This year’s poster contest theme: “Strong Trees, Strong Planet!”, inspired all five elementary schools in the district to coordinate lessons in science, regarding trees and how they affect the planet, with the fourth grade art classes. The contest was held conjunction with National Youth Art Month in March.
“The Montville Township Environmental Commission wishes to congratulate the 2019 Poster Contest winners, and thanks all who participated,” said Montville Township Environmental Commissioner Michele C. Caron. “This township tradition brings together the visual arts and the sciences for some beautiful results and a fun memorable learning experience for all who choose to participate.”
Over 95 fourth grade students from the Montville Township Public Schools district participated. Elementary school principals, art teachers and fourth grade teachers, assisted students in developing their visual creativity.
This year’s poster contest winners are:
Julia Ghumwala – Woodmont
Maanvi Gupta – Woodmont
Alessandra Ciullo – William Mason
Audriana Giudice – Cedar Hill
Elizabeth Dickson – Cedar Hill
Jaiden Patel – Hilldale
The winning students, their parents, families, neighbors, and friends along with township officials, Environmental Commission members, and 2019 Honoree Fred Ackerman will be planting a flowering pear tree. The tree will be planted at the Montville Township Municipal Building property, 195 Changebridge Road, in Montville, New Jersey.
ALL residents are invited to attend the celebration. FREE tree saplings will be available for those attending the event. In addition, the fellow classmates of each poster contest winner will be given free saplings to bring home and plant.
Contest winning students will also be presented with a plaque and ribbon.
Dignitaries from across the state are invited to the celebration.
Light refreshments will be served following the ceremony.
The Montville Township Environmental Commission has held an Arbor Day Celebration for the past 21 years. Montville Township is a proud member of the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA.
The Montville Township Environmental Commission works with township residents in the development of green space and protection of trees and open spaces for residents to enjoy throughout Montville Township.
The commission also promotes recycling, environmental initiatives, and environmental sciences with the all students in Montville Township Public Schools in grades Pre-K through twelve, and works closely with the Montville Township High School Earth Club, which boasts over 80 student members. MTHS Earth Club will provide refreshments. The Earth Club students have representation on the Montville Township Environmental Commission. The MTHS students have actively participated in peer programs in the elementary schools over the past three years. These interactive educational events are very popular with younger students who learn about recycling and environmental needs from the MTHS students.
Two years ago, the MTHS Earth Club won the Association of NJ Environmental Commissions [ANJEC] Award of Excellence, for the elementary school program they developed. Each year the program is perfected and MTHS students present the program to Montville Township Public Schools’ elementary students. The program consists of a variety of stations with hands-on lessons that excite and inspire young students.
