Marketing and design meld as faculty model original student fashions
New for the 2016-2017 academic year is the Montville Township High School’s Fashion Marketing course. Taught by marketing teacher Rebecca Sheehan, the class is open to tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade students. The semester began with a thorough study of the various markets within the fashion industry.
Then students were assigned the task of focusing their attention on the design process and design elements. Through a neck tie fashion show, in which the students designed the fashion using Duck Tape® brand tape, they learned about the importance of color, silhouette, and fabric. They also learned about customers.
“The students implemented the design process by selecting a ‘client’ (a teacher),” said Sheehan. “They interviewed their ‘clients’ to understand the individual style of each faculty member. Once this information was gathered, the students sketched out a design for the ‘tie.’”
Sheehan explained that students were not restricted to a traditionally styled neck tie.
“They were told to create a ‘tie’ that fit their client's personality and style,” said Sheehan.
ShurTech® Company donated the Duck Tape®. Selecting from the brand’s wide range of patterns and colors, the students set out to create their visions for their clients.
On the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving, the faculty models wore the students’ Duck Tape® tie fashions on the runway and throughout the day.
Bow ties, and traditional neck ties in all shades and textures, including the American flag, were a part of the final show. However, some students created interesting variations. One “tie” looked more like necklace with a large pendent and another “tie” was worn more like a vest.
“Love my tie and all the ties!” e-mailed History teacher Scott Riotto following the fashion event. “Kids did a great job!”
“The students went far above and beyond expectations for this project,” Sheehan said. “And they really captured each teacher's personality in their creations.”
