 Welcome to the Department of
World Languages & ESL

  World Language

Department Philosophy

The study of a world language develops and encourages the communicative proficiency necessary in today’s pluralistic society. It should foster understanding and tolerance of other cultures in an ever changing world.

The selection of the specific languages studied should be relevant to student interests and needs. If language is personal, it is meaningful.

Our classroom activities and assessments involve students using the three modes of communication (interpretive, interpersonal, presentational) as well as demonstrating cultural awareness and understanding.

Our goal is to provide a comfortable and engaging classroom environment in which all students are encouraged to work to their fullest potential.

The World Language Program at Lazar Middle School

At Robert R. Lazar Middle School we promote the idea of educating students to be exposed and have the opportunity to learn multiple languages.  The early language learning experience helps students to appreciate the diversity and values of the cultural differences and helps them to develop a comfort in speaking the second language.  As students continue to learn the second language we hope to develop an increasing level of proficiency which may eventually lead students into future economic, diplomatic, educational and personal experiences to expand their lifelong learning experience.

Middle School students in 6th grade are able to sample Spanish, French, Italian and Mandarin Chinese.  Through exposure to each of our four language options, students are then able to choose one language of study for all of 7th and 8th grades while at Lazar.  With a stronger two year foundation of the language students are then encouraged to continue that language of study when they move up to the high school. After completing the middle school world language program students typically advance to level 2 or level 2 honors as 9th graders.  Beginning high school at a level 2 in a language gives students the opportunity to continue up to level 5 or Advanced Placement in the language of study.

"One language sets you in a corridor for life.  Two languages open every door along the way."
