It's hard to believe we're off to another third grade school year and the transistion from summer to fall!  Thank you so much for helping the boys and girls become organized by providing them with the supplies they will need each day. I am looking forward to a wonderful year as we partner together assisting your children in the achievement of success!
    Best Regards,
    Mrs. Otte
The boys and girls will be introduced to many math skills and concepts this year as we cover the curriculum, which is aligned to the Common Core State Standards.  Some of the topics covered will be numeration, addition & subtraction, place value, multiplication, division, fractions, measurement & data, and geometry. We are excited to begin enVision math 2.0, our new math program!

The boys and girls will be working hard on strengthening reading skills during the reading workshop period.  The children will have the opportunity to practice using many reading strategies and skills while working in our guided reading groups and during "Book Club".  Book Club is yet another way to assist children with the acquisition and application of reading skills and concepts through the use of novels. We are excited to begin Schoolwide, our new reading program!

    Word Study
The boys and girls will develop a general knowledge of English and spelling using an integrated approach of phonics, spelling, and vocabulary instruction using the program Words Their Way.
The Montville School District has recently adopted a new core science curriculum. Inspire Science addresses the Next Generation Science Standards (NJSS). This curriculum was designed by McGraw-Hill Education in effort to combine science and engineering practices with problem-based learning, math skills, and literacy. The goal is to motivate students to become curious and creative in the problem solving process thus improving results in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). There are budding scientists among us!

    Social Studies
The boys and girls will be studying different kinds of communities this year.  Specifically, they will be learning about the features as well as the similarities and differences among urban, suburban, and rural communities.  The children will have the opportunity to make a community pamphlet highlighting their community of Montville.

The boys and girls will continue to work on improving their manuscript writing. They will be introduced to the cursive letters of the alphabet, which will periodically be incorporated into an interdisciplinary technology period using an app on the iPad as well as paper/pencil.The children are always very excited about acquiring this new skill!
The boys and girls will be studying a variety of genres during our writing workshop period.  Our writing units of study include Narrative, Information, and Opinion/Argument.  In addition to the units of study, we will focus on the writing process as well as the traits of writing and the use of craft.  Throughout our genre studies, there will be an emphasis on grammar and the mechanics of writing.
Here's to a great school year!
