MTHS Junior Laura Justnes Lands Spot in NJ All-State Mixed Ensemble Chorus

Montville Township High School junior Laura Justnes, was selected for the Mixed (SATB) Ensemble for NJ All-State Chorus 2021.

Montville Township High School (MTHS) junior Laura Justnes (Class of '23), was selected for the Mixed (SATB) Ensemble for NJ All-State Chorus 2021.

Justnes is one of only 141 singers selected out of the 400 students that auditioned. The alto placed 14 out of 50 in her voice part.

“I was very excited and super pleased when I found out I had been chosen,” Justnes said. “Having the virtual chorus last year (at MTHS) really helped me to be prepared for this audition.”

For 2021 the auditions were held virtually and the 2021 concert will also be virtual.

Justnes, who last auditioned in-person for an All-State concert while she was in middle school, noted that there are some advantages to virtual auditions and performances. She explained that her audition, which was intense and extensive, requiring many musical components, was prepared from the comfort of her own home. Also, since it was virtual, she was able to record her audition pieces several times and submit the takes she felt best featured her musical skills.

Now that she has been selected for the 2021 All-State Chorus, Justnes is currently attending virtual rehearsals and preparing final recordings of herself singing her alto part in a virtual setting. As with all the NJ singers selected for the 2021 All-State Chorus, her voice part will be overlaid with others from her section, Ultimately the individual musical clips of 141 students from across NJ will be combined to create the 2021 SATB virtual All-State concert.

“It takes a lot of support from classmates, teachers and family,” Justnes explained when asked how she prepared for the auditions and rehearsals. As a student who loves to sing, she shared that she feels she has been seriously preparing for auditions and performances since middle school. The junior noted that her teachers all along the way have helped her to learn to: “Be present,” “Keep trying,” and “Keep going.”
