Update From NJ Governor Regarding 2021-2022 In-Class Instruction

August 6, 2021

Dear Parents, Students, and Staff Members:

Montville Township Public Schools will be fully open for in-person instruction for the 2021-2022 academic year.  We are looking forward to welcoming students back on September 9th.

Today in a briefing, Governor Murphy issued the following directive with regard to the opening of the 2021-2022 school year:

“All students, educators, staff, and visitors will be required to wear masks inside a school building regardless of vaccination status for the start of the 2021-2022 academic year.”  He added, “As soon as conditions allow, we will lift this requirement.”

As indicated in our “Safe Return Plan,” the district’s position on masks is that we will comply with direction that is given to us from the State.  Masks will be required for everyone in the 2021-2022 school year until such point when this requirement from the Governor is rescinded.  In addition, masks are required on school buses.

Over the summer, a number of parents have indicated to me that if masks were mandated in schools, they would choose to homeschool their child or enroll them in a private school placement.  While I would hope that parents would reconsider and maintain their students in the Montville Township Public Schools, I fully respect your right to make this choice for your child.  If it is your intention to withdraw your child from the district, I would suggest that you contact the main office of your child's school at your earliest convenience to initiate that process, as class assignments for September are currently being finalized and decisions on staffing are being made.

Thank you for your continued understanding, support, and cooperation as we continue to navigate the challenges of the pandemic.  The faculty, staff, and administration of the Montville Township Public Schools are looking forward to an outstanding year.

I hope you all enjoy the rest of the summer!

Sincerely,

René T. Rovtar, Ed.D.
