Role of the Certified School Nurse
A Certified School Nurse is a professional Registered Nurse with a NJ teaching certificate. She is a health services specialist who assists students, families, and staff in attaining and maintaining optimal health and healthy attitudes. . The primary function of the Certified School Nurse (CSN) is to strengthen the educational process through the improvement and promotion of student health. CSNs carry out t his primary role by promoting health and safety, intervening with actual and potential health problems, and actively collaborating with administration, teachers, and support staff to build strong student/family relationships for student self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.
Goals of the School Health Program
The goals of the school health program are carried out by the certified school nurse. She provides and manages mandated NJ State School Health Services, such as:

Assess illness(es) and injuries and determines interventions

Maintains health and immunizations records for school attendance

Manages exclusion of students with infectious conditions

Provides vision, hearing, blood pressure, height, weight and scoliosis screenings as per Administrative Code

Administers medication as per Administrative Code and school district policies

Provides Health Education instruction

Provides health and nutrition counseling as needed
