SPEECH
"WE LEARN COMMUNICATION SKILLS"

Mrs. Guilder has the opportunity of
working with all children at William Mason School who present articulation,
voice, fluency and language disorders. This
is her 10th year at William Mason School.
She worked one year at Woodmont School and was a Speech Specialist in
another school district 13 years before coming to Montville. Mrs. Guilder received a B.S. in Speech Pathology from
Douglass College at Rutgers University and a M.S. in Speech Pathology from
Teachers College at Columbia University. She
holds the Speech/Language Specialist Certificate, is licensed in the State of
N.J. and is Clinically Certified by the American Speech Language Hearing
Association.

The Speech Program at William Mason
School is part of the Special Education Department of the Montville Public
Schools. There are specific rules
and regulations from the N.J. Department of Special Services that are followed
for identifying and treating children who present speech disorders. Developmental sound norms are used for articulation in
determining eligibility for speech services.
Testing and teacher input must show a student’s speech is affecting
their educational performance in the classroom. Mrs. Guilder is case manager and teacher for all speech
students with articulation, voice and fluency difficulties. Both parents and classroom teachers are involved in planning
Individual Educational Plans (IEP’S) for speech students and attending annual
reviews. Goals and objectives are
written and followed for each student.

Students who exhibit difficulty with
receptive or expressive language skills are tested by a Speech Specialist who is
part of the Child Study Team. After
testing if the student is found eligible for speech services, Mrs. Guilder then
works with the child and becomes part of the child’s team.
Speech students are usually seen in small
groups twice a week for half hour sessions.
Most work with other children in the same grade who present a similar
speech pattern. Children are
enrolled in speech until they reach their goals and objectives in their Speech
IEP and their speech is not affecting their educational performance. Students
work at their individual rate of learning.
