Resource Center ...
Where special things happen every day.

The Program

A part of Montville 's Department of Special Services, William Mason's Resource Center assists children to achieve academic success.  After children are identified by their teachers or parents as having significant difficulties in reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, or a combination of these subjects, a referral is made to the Child Study Team (CST).  This group is made up of a school psychologist, social worker, learning consultant and others who evaluate student performance and development, identify and assess a student's needs, and recommend strategies and methods of instruction that compliment the child's learning style.

If the student is recommended to receive services from a Resource Center teacher, the CST and the child's parents create a plan called the IEP, or Individualized Education Plan, which addresses the specific academic needs of the student.

Options for instruction include:

  • In-class Resource - where the special education teacher works within the regular classroom setting to assist the student to learn.
  • Pullout support - where the student comes to the Resource Center room to have classroom skills reinforced by the special education teacher.
  • Pullout Replacement - where the student comes to the Resource Center room and the special education teacher provides individualized instruction to replace a subject which is taught in the regular classroom setting.

THE STAFF

The four Resource Center teachers, Mrs. Diane Oberlin, Miss Kathy Sheehan, Mrs. Jennifer McLaughlin, and Mrs. Barbara Tuhy bring a total of seventy-four years of teaching experience to William Mason's Resource Center.  Mrs. Oberlin received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from William Paterson College/University.  Miss Sheehan received her Bachelor’s degree from New Jersey University.  Mrs. McLaughlin received her undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from William Paterson University. Mrs. Tuhy’s undergraduate degree was conferred by Newark State College, and she received her Masters degree from William Paterson College.  All the Resource Center teachers are certified to teach both elementary and special education in the state of New Jersey, and continue to study techniques and strategies to be used with children with special needs.

It is the Resource Center staff’s pleasure and challenge to help all children learn.  Mrs. Oberlin, Miss Sheehan, Mrs. McLaughlin, and Mrs. Tuhy are often found in regular education classes helping their own students, as well as other class members.  In addition, the Resource Center teachers help their colleagues to design lessons, tests, and activities that address the needs of all students.
