PHYSICAL EDUCATION
With Mr. Saunders
March 2010
Spring is almost here....yeah. Children in all grades will be starting their hockey unit shortly. The younger grades will work on hockey skills and play modified games with these skills, which include no contact hockey. This is a safe and easy game for them to follow. The upper grades will play line hockey progressing to positioned hockey. They will be using nerf (sponge) sticks and pucks for safety.
February 2010

Can you believe half the school year is already done? It goes by so fast. The children are finishing up their fitness units, learning the proper mechanics of various exercises, each modified for the specific grade levels. The children in grades 4 and 5 have just completed their fitness test. I am very proud of all of them.
Please remember to have your children dress appropriately on their PE Days. Many children have been wearing various types of shoes instead of their sneakers. The popularity of Uggs and Crocks, as well as platform sneakers or sneakers without laces puts your child in danger if they play. Many times, they have to sit out for an activity, which is upsetting to them. Thank you for your cooperation.
January 2010

Welcome back to school. I hope you all enjoyed your winter vacation. In PE class, we are finishing up our basketball unit. The children have learned a lot while having fun with their basketball skills. Our next lesson will begin shortly which will include various fitness skills. The children in grades 4 and 5 will also be training for The President's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports test. This test includes pull-ups, curl-ups, a shuttle run, and a flexibility exam.
Please mark on your calendar your child's PE days so they remember to wear their sneakers.
December 2009

It is hard to believe the holidays are upon us. All the grades will be preparing to start a basketball unit in December. Skills we will work on include dribbling, passing, and shooting. The kids in the upper grades will also take a 30 second layup test, as well as a foul shooting test to prepare them for middle school physical education. Happy holidays to all!
November 2009

In grades 3-5, Mr. Saunders just completed a Team Handball unit with the children that works on teamwork, throwing, and catching. The children did a great job. Team Handball is like water polo without the water. In grades K-2, the children have been working on upper body strength. The have homework in PE, which is performing push-ups at home each time a commercial comes on the TV. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
October 2009

The children in Mr. Saunders PE classes have been working very hard on their soccer skills from Kindergarten through grade five. The children in grades K-2 have learned how to dribble the soccer ball, while playing line soccer. Students in grades 3-5 have been working on dribbling, passing, shooting, and goal play. They have also been concentrating on the team play in positioned soccer.
Our 5th graders participated in a new national event called Exercise US. Look on the special events page to read more!

PE NOTES
On the first Wednesday in May, Valley View will participate in Project ACES (All Children Exercise Simultaneously). Children from all over the world will exercise in unison to promote fitness. Millions of children from all 50 states and over 50 countries will join in. Valley View will also be hosting the event once again. To find out more, click here.
In the first week of June, our school will have its annual Field Day. Many volunteers will be needed. Last year, we had over 100 parents (Moms and Dads) join us. WE NEED MORE! Look for the information coming home with your children during the Spring.
