Let the “ Battle” Begin
All the fifth graders are actively involved in preparing for the “ Battle of the Books”. This is a district-wide program that we participate in where the children read six books;
- Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix
- Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo
- Loser by Jerry Spinelli
- The Missing ‘Gator of Gumbo Limbo by Jean Craighead George
- Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan
- Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh by Robert C. Obrien
They are given approximately twelve weeks to read the books and then there will be a “School Battle” The winning team of this battle will represent Valley View at the District Battle.
The books were selected by the fifth grade Media Specialists. They represent good literature, some different genres, different levels of reading and interest. So far the students have been positive about the books and many are keeping up with the summary assignments I have asked them to do for all the books as they read them. Please discuss the reading with your child. This helps them to organize their thoughts about the book and to remember the book. If you have time, you might enjoy reading some of the books and then discussing them with your child. Thank you for always supporting our reading and library programs.
