GRADE 1
January 2010
Since this is our first Newsletter for January, the first grade teachers would like to wish you a Happy New Year! The children have started 2010 working hard and learning many new things!
Social Studies --Our focus in January is on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The children are learning words like equality, peaceful, and Nobel Prize. The children will be learning where he grew up, what he stood for and facts about the Nobel Peace Prize. The children made posters called, "I Have A Dream." They wrote about what their dream is for their community, their country, and the world.
Math--Our class is completing a Chapter on Telling Time. The children have been working on telling time to the hour and half hour. They learned how to read an analog clock as well as a digital clock. The Chapter also has the children listing the days of the week and months of the year in order.
Fundations--Our class is completing Unit 6. Soon we will start Unit 7. I will be sending home the Parent sheets for this Unit. The children will be introduced to the glued sounds ending with ng (ang, ing, ong, ung) and four ending with nk (ank, ink, onk, unk). We will also be working on the trick words: out, so, are, two, about, into, only, other, and new. Remember trick words are words that we do not sound out but need to remember.
Writing Workshop--We are working on Descriptive Writing. The children are using their five senses to come up with different adjectives. The children had fun writing 4 or 5 sentences to describe an object. Then the children read their clues to the class and we had to guess what the object was. The children did a wonderful job describing the objects! We had fun guessing the answers!
The children have also been writing poems about Polar Bears, stories about the winter and making paper bag snowmen puppets!
Until next time...let's hope it warms up!
