Freshman Clarinetist Jennifer Weiss makes New Jersey All State Symphonic Band

All state freshman clarinetist

Montville Township High School student will also tour concert halls in Budapest and Vienna this summer

Montville Township High School (MTHS) student Jennifer Weiss was selected for the New Jersey All State Band. The clarinetist is one of the few freshmen to have landed a spot in the highly competitive ensemble. All State band programs are sponsored by the New Jersey Music Educators Association (NJMEA). The NJ All State Band will perform at the prestigious New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 3:00PM.

“This year, I want to congratulate Jennifer Weiss who, as a freshman, made it into the All State Symphonic Band on the Clarinet,” said MTHS Band Director Kenneth Korlishin, “This is quite an accomplishment for Jennifer.  Through her talent and hard work, we are proud to have her represent MTHS in this great accomplishment!”

Through the audition process, Weiss competed in January against high school students from North, Central and South Jersey Regional Ensembles.

“It is an extremely competitive field of very talented students representing every high school in the state,” added Montville Township Public Schools Supervisor of the Fine and Applied Arts Edward Fleischman. “Earning a seat in such ensemble is quite an achievement.”

Weiss, who attended the esteemed Interlochen Arts Camp as a sixth grade student from the Montville Township Public Schools’ Robert R. Lazar Middle School and Brevard Music Center of North Carolina last summer, also represents MTHS this season as a member of the NJMEA Region I Band of North Jersey.

“I love the clarinet because it is versatile,” Weiss said. “It has a good part in classical music, but it is also great to play jazz with it. I enjoy playing jazz.”

Coming up, Weiss join the other All State Band members for a two day rehearsal at Rutgers University, followed the Saturday, February 25 concert at NJPAC.

This summer, Weiss will tour the concert halls of Budapest and Vienna with the New Jersey Youth Symphony.
