Early Dismissal March 10 - Afternoon Conferences Clubs and Support Groups Listed below are descriptions of the various clubs and organizations available for the students to take part in at Lazar.
Students are reminded to listen to the morning announcements and check the TVs in the hallway for upcoming meeting days and times. All students staying after school for any reason must have a note to be able to stay.
Art Club The Art Club is open to students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The enrollment is limited to 20 students due to space restrictions. Anyone interested must see Mrs. Travers for enrollment prior to the start of the club. They will meet once a week after school. The club offers the students the opportunity to work in a variety of two and three dimensional art.
Builders Club Builders Club is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Montville Township. Our goal is to develop leadership qualities in young people through experiences in volunteer community service. The objectives of the club are to provide opportunities for working together in service to school and community; to develop leadership potential; to foster the development of strong moral character, and to encourage loyalty to school, community and nation.
Computer
Club/TV Studio Students will have the opportunity to work in the video production studio as well as choose from topics such as Web Page design, Web Quests, or providing tech support. Students work together to share their knowledge about computers. Beginners are welcome! We love to share what we know!
Dance/Gymnastics
Club Dance/Gymnastics Club meets all year long for all dancers and gymnasts. Club members will learn new and exciting dance/tumbling moves that will be incorporated into a routine. Club members will put on a performance for the entire school at the conclusion of the year. All grades and ability levels are welcome.
Drama Club Drama Club provides students with an outlet to act. They experience try-outs, practices and a performance. There are two productions each year; one fall and one spring.
Environmental Club A club made up of students who are interested in creating more environmentally friendly surroundings in and around the school by maintaining outdoor gardens, attracting winged wildlife, and recycling appropriate materials.
Fitness Club Participants meet twice a week to enhance their knowledge of exercise, fitness and choosing a healthy lifestyle by utilizing weights, sports activities, computers and getting involved with community services.
Flag Football Advisor - Mr. Vila Flag Football is open to students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The enrollment is limited to 20 students. Anyone interested must see Mr. Vila to sign up and receive a permission slip prior to the start of the club. We will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. This is a chance to have fun, play with your friends, and possibly meet a new friend. The permission slip needs to be signed in order to stay after school.
Forensics Students meet to sharpen their public speaking skills and study debate and argumentation through role-playing and many other activities.
Girl to Girl Group Advisor - Mrs. McCorkle For any young women who want to talk openly about issues like rumors, cliques, social pressures, and backstabbing. We will explore those issues and help you to identify your own personal strengths while you support one another on issues pertaining to self image, dangers of drug and alcohol abuse, resisting peer pressure, the importance of internet safety, and much more.
Intramural Basketball Intramural Basketball allows all girls and boys in Lazar to participate in drills and games to enhance knowledge of the game.
Intramural Soccer Advisor: Miss Katchen and Miss Murphy Intramural Soccer is open to students in grades 6, 7 and 8. Members will have fun, meet new people and enhance their knowledge of the game through small-sided games as well as tournaments.
Jazz Band (Invitational) Band members, whose instruments lend themselves to jazz band instrumentation, will be invited to explore the various styles of Jazz and performance techniques. The sessions will be rehearsal oriented. Sessions will begin in February meeting weekly after school through May.
Lazar Ledger Any 6th, 7th or 8th grade student interested in writing for the school newspaper may join. We meet about once a week to once every other week. Newspapers come out 3-4 times a year.
Loss Group Advisor - Mrs. McCorkle 8 - week session for students who have lost a loved one (grandparent, parent, sibling, cousin, friend, etc.). The purpose of this group is to provide a forum for sharing your thoughts and feelings without being judged. it is a place to discuss your loved one and life after the loss. Peers who have gone through the same thing are here to support one another.
Make-A-Wish Make A-Wish Club has been working with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to raise money, through multiple fund raising activities, to help grant wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses.
Mathcounts Mathcounts is a nationwide math coaching and competition program. The Mathcounts program is designed to increase interest and involvement in mathematics among middle school students. Students meet in coaching sessions in the beginning of the school year and send a group of students to the regional competition in February. Winners progress to the state competition in March. The top four scorers at the states earn the privilege to represent their state at the National Competition. For more information go to www.mathcounts.org.
NJ Peer to Peer NJ Peer to Peer is a program which provides 8th grade students the opportunity to do for their peers. Students are selected for this program through an interview process and will meet Tuesdays after school.
Select Choir (Invitational) Any 7th or 8th grade chorus students interested in being involved in a select choir are invited to join. Rehearsals will be one day a week, after school, from January through May. More information will be available in December.
Student Council A democratic organization composed of elected homeroom representatives and officers who represent their classmates. The Student Council plans social activities (dances) and participates in community projects (can food drive). The Write Eye Advisors: Mrs. Bostwick, Miss Kleman, Miss Lomauro The Write Eye is a student produced magazine featuring essays, poems, creative writing pieces and other works written by Lazar students. The writing pieces are nominated by teachers, peers, or presented by the author themselves for review by The Write Eye staff. Each piece is then discussed, analyzed, and voted upon for publication by the staff. All staff members state their opinions on the merits of the writing piece in the yearly magazine. In addition, The Write Eye worked in conjunction with Mrs. Silva, Lazar's art teacher, to pair writing pieces with various art work produced by Lazar students. The Write Eye will meet every other Wednesday and will be an active group of nine to eleven students.
Yearbook (8th grade
students only) Be a part of your yearbook. Help Design, edit, and take digital photographs. Learn to use Adobe Pagemaker and Photoshop.
