Mr. Haugh and Mr. Jones asked all of the contestants to "Come On Down!" when their names were called. Each grade level competed against one another to become the grade level champion. After answering ten questions, the one contestant who had the most correct answers won a prize! The other contestants won a consolation prize.
One question we all wondered was, "How did Mrs. Fierro miss an Elvis question?"

Ms. D. was captain of the Hilldale Ship! October 31 was a spooktacular event at Hilldale School. Teachers and students alike were dressed in their best costumes ready to scare the next unsuspecting victim. Students paraded around the playground to show off their costumes for their friends and family. Afterwards, everyone rushed inside for goodies, treats, crafts and games at the spectacular parties, organized by the always wonderful Hilldale parents. |

New Jersey Secretary of State
Visits Hilldale
Regena L. Thomas, N.J. Secretary of State, visited Hilldale School on January 13, 2004, as part of the King Reads initiative, sponsored by the State Department. The initiative, aimed at students in grades K-3, encourages students to read as much as they can so there dreams will come true. After reading about this initiative, Ms. Dispenziere, principal of Hilldale School, contacted the State Department of Education and expressed her interest in having Secretary Thomas visit. In December, the principal received a congratulatory e-mail stating that Hilldale School had been selected for a visit by Secretary Thomas. Upon her arrival, Secretary Thomas met with the first graders in the Media Center. She told them about her childhood and the bookmobile that visited her small hometown in Kentucky on a monthly basis. The students gasped when she told them that she did not go to a library until she was fourteen years old. She read a book about Martin Luther King Jr. and posed several questions to the students. Asked for words that they would associate with King, the students responded, “Love, Peace, Freedom, and Together.”

Secretary
Thomas promised to return to Hilldale in the spring for a pizza and ice-cream
party, if every first grader would read five new books. Since Hilldale
encourages reading through a school wide read -a-thon, a 50 Book Club,
a 100 Book club, and classroom teacher incentives, the students will definitely
meet with secretary Thomas again this year. Secretary Thomas received
a certificate of appreciation and a “Star Reader” ribbon for a job well
done from Ms. Dispenziere. She put the ribbon on and promised to
wear it to the Governor’s State of State address.
