Can you add, subtract, multiply, and divide a group of four numbers to reach a total of 24?  Students in the third, fourth, and fifth grades participate in a school-wide tournament that tests their knowledge of the building blocks of mathematics.  Math 24 challenges students to use mental math at a rapid pace to solve a problem.  Students are seated in groups of  four to compete against one another.  Each group is given a placemat on which a stack of playing cards is placed.  Each card contains four numbers totaling 24.  Students must use their mental math skills to add, subtract, multiply, and/or divide to reach 24 first.  The first student to place a finger on the card and correctly state the sequence reaching 24 takes the card.  Cards are ranked with a point  system of 1 through 3 based on the level of difficulty.  Each group is given a two-minute time period.  After the conclusion of two rounds, the scores are tallied for each student.  Each grade level crowns one champion.  The top two players from each grade level will advance to a final competition.  These finalists will use their knowledge and quick thinking to battle it out for the title of school champion.
